A unique project that blurs the boundaries between ecology and the unconscious is currently unfolding in Jeju.
제주 담소창작스튜디오 입주 작가 김미란은 개인전 ‘뿌리는 뿔이다’를 통해 독창적인 조형 세계를 선보이고 있습니다.
작가는 직접 채집한 나무뿌리를 이용해 동물의 뿔 형상으로 전환하며, 식물성과 동물성의 경계를 하나의 순환 구조 안에서 다시 바라봅니다.
Kim Mi-ran, a resident artist at Jeju Damso Creative Studio, is presenting her unique sculptural world through her solo exhibition, “Roots Are Horns.”
Using tree roots she collected herself, the artist transforms them into the shapes of animal horns, reexamining the boundary between the plant and animal realms within a single cyclical structure.
이번 전시는 단순한 조형 실험에 머물지 않습니다.
생태계의 먹이사슬과 인간 내면의 무의식을 연결하며, 보이지 않는 관계와 흐름을 이야기합니다.
김미란은 “뿔은 고립된 기관이 아니라 뿌리에서 시작된 영양의 흐름이 응결된 결과”라고 설명합니다.
전시장 속 뿔의 형상들은 숲 아래 감춰진 시간과 토양의 기억을 품은 채 존재합니다.
This exhibition goes beyond a simple sculptural experiment.
It connects the food chain of the ecosystem with the human subconscious, narrating invisible relationships and flows.
Kim Mi-ran explains, “Horns are not isolated organs but the result of the flow of nutrients originating from the roots.”
The horn-like forms within the exhibition space exist while holding the memories of time and soil hidden beneath the forest.
특히 이번 전시의 핵심은 ‘위계의 전도’에 있습니다.
지표 아래 숨겨진 뿌리를 모든 것을 지탱하는 잠재성으로, 땅 위로 드러난 뿔을 그 잠재성이 드러난 결과로 바라보는 것입니다.
In particular, the core of this exhibition lies in the “reversal of hierarchy.”
It views the roots hidden beneath the surface as the potential that sustains everything, and the horns revealed above ground as the result of that potential manifesting.
보이는 것보다 보이지 않는 하부 구조가 더 중요할 수 있다는 메시지는 지금 우리의 삶과도 묘하게 맞닿아 있습니다.
작가는 숲을 “잠들지 않고 깨어 꿈꾸는 공간”이라고 표현하며, 뿌리에서 뿔로 이어지는 과정을 무의식이 의식으로 떠오르는 움직임에 비유합니다.
이번 전시는 5월 9일부터 18일까지 제주시 연동 담소창작스튜디오에서 만나볼 수 있습니다.
관람객들은 뿌리와 뿔 사이를 오가며, 언어 이전의 기억과 집단적 원형이 남긴 흔적들을 천천히 마주하게 됩니다.
The message that the invisible underlying structure may be more important than what is visible resonates strangely with our lives today.
The artist describes the forest as “a space that never sleeps but remains awake and dreaming,” likening the process from root to horn to the movement of the unconscious rising into consciousness.
This exhibition will be on view from May 9 to 18 at Damso Creative Studio in Yeondong-dong, Jeju City.
As visitors move between the roots and the horns, they will slowly encounter traces left by pre-linguistic memories and collective archetypes.
