“The 3-Second Rule for Bread” I Actually Tried It
ACCENT ON LIFE
Have you ever believed the saying that food dropped on the floor is safe to eat if picked up within 3 seconds?
When Japanese scientists conducted their own experiments, they found that time wasn’t actually the key factor.

The “3-second rule” is known as the 3-second rule in Korea and Japan, and the 5-second rule in the United States.
However, Japanese experts and a 2016 study by Rutgers University in the U.S. directly tested this urban legend.

The results were surprising. Contamination was confirmed not only when food touched the floor for 3 seconds, but even when it made contact for just a split second.
The U.S. study also compared 5 seconds, 30 seconds, and 60 seconds; while the risk increased with longer contact times, it showed that bacteria can transfer to food even in a brief moment.

In particular, foods with high moisture content, such as jelly and apples, were more prone to contamination, and bread was no exception.
Experts explained that the moisture content of the food and the level of contamination on the floor are far more important factors than “how many seconds” it was on the floor.

Furthermore, bacteria do not disappear by brushing them off with your hand or blowing on them, nor does reheating eliminate all bacteria.
However, experts added that cooking without washing your hands or leaving cooked food out for more than two hours poses a greater risk of food poisoning.

Next time food falls on the floor, why not think about the condition of the floor first, rather than the time that has passed?
